Winter Weather Damage? SERVPRO is Here to Help®

Winter is in full swing in Michigan, bringing snow, ice, and frigid temperatures. According to the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, frozen water pipes impact approximately 250,000 homes each winter. Even the smallest crack - just one-eight of an inch - can lead to leaks of up to 250 gallons of water per day, causing extensive damage to floors, furniture, and personal belongings. Both PVC and copper pipes are vulnerable to freezing and bursting.
Protect Your Home or Business from Frozen Pipes
Preventative Steps:
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas like crawl spaces and attics.
- Use approved heat tape for extra protection.
- Seal gaps around wiring, vents, and pipes with caulk or insulation.
- Disconnect garden hoses and, if possible, shut off and drain outdoor faucet pipes.
If You're Away:
- Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (ensure fresh batteries if it's battery-operated).
- Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to check on your home.
- Turn off and drain the main water supply to prevent major leaks.
